Learning at HHSC is about much more than academics. We aim to teach students about how to navigate their personal and professional lives as well. This includes learning how to communicate effectively, and how to manage tasks and projects with finesse. Students learn about much more than classwork--they learn about the concepts they'll need to be successful as an adult.

Questions considered:

• How can we effectively communicate with others?
• Are certain financial decisions wise? Or are they high-risk and low reward?
• How can we work on multiple tasks or objectives without falling behind?

Growth is about more than academics, too--it's about growing as a person. We want our students to be prepared to respond to setbacks, and to be able to care for themselves. Nurturing oneself is more important than ever. Our students grow individually and as a group when they learn how to collaborate with others.

• What does "being healthy" really mean?
• How do you move past setbacks?
• How do you work with people who have different ideas or views than you?

The "great unknown," as many call it, can be daunting. When we consider all that we don't know, we may feel overwhelmed or unprepared. The "Explore" piece of the Portrait of a Graduate encompasses "outside school" learning and concepts. Students learn about career paths and general skills they'll need to be successful in life in more ways than one.

• How do you make a decision and choose a career path?
• How do you gain experience before you have a job or career in your field?
• Is it possible to learn general life skills from others?

• Civic Responsibility

To serve is to belong or contribute to something bigger than oneself--in this case, our students. This piece of the Portrait of a Graduate refers to the concept of community and personal responsibility to those around them, both directly and indirectly. It is the concept of voting, volunteering, paying taxes, getting involved and advocating for things that are important to them.

• How can you act with integrity?
• What are ways young people can get involved with their community? What about outreach opportunities?
• Is it possible to be a leader with a service mindset? What about a growth mindset?
