Grade 4

In English/Language Arts, they'll:

• Use context clues and text features to determine the meaning of unknown words
• Identify and use homographs, homophones, synonyms, and antonyms
• Use suffixes, prefixes, and Greek and Latin affixes and roots to find word meanings
• Describe characters, settings, or events in a story and explain how they impact the plot
• Identify points of view
• Write sentences using progressive verb tenses, relative adverbs/adjectives, and transitional words

In Math, they'll:

• Compare multi-digit numbers using place value using symbols
• Estimate sums and differences with multi-digit numbers
• Identify a whole number as prime or composite and determine whether it is a multiple of a given number
• Solve multi-step problems using division by representing these problems using equations with a variable
• Multiply fractions and compare fractions to decimals
• Solve word problems that involve converting metric units of measure
• Recognize and classify angles and two-dimensional shapes and figures

In Science, students will:

• Model the cause-and-effect relationship between the force acting on an object and the object's motion
• Cite evidence to explain how speed is related to the amount of kinetic energy of an object and why an object's speed can change
• Use observations and evidence to explain how energy is transferred from place to place by sound, light, heat, and electricity
• Explain the roles of water, wind, and heat play in weathering, erosion, and decomposition
• Describe the presence of volcanoes on continents and under water, and the processes that occur during volcanic eruptions
• Develop models that show how organisms respond to changes in their habitats over time

In Social Studies, students will:

• Use map skills to estimate distances
• Describe landforms and water features
• Describe early growth and development in Indiana
• Create and interpret timelines that show the relationships of individuals, events, and movements in the history of Indiana
• Determine a position on a public issue (past or present) and use a variety of materials to support the claim

In Second Step, students learn to:

• Define respect and empathy
• Identify multiple feelings and differing perspectives in given scenarios
• Identify and demonstrate skills for joining a group
• Identify situations that cause anxiety
• State a problem without blaming anyone
