Grade 3

Grade 3 students can expect to use more comprehensive reading skills, advanced math, and hands-on science. Most students in this age range still enjoy school, and are eager to learn new skills. By grade 3, students have an excellent foundation of knowledge!

Grade 3 Overview

ELA

In English/Language Arts, they'll:

Recognize and use word parts to solve an unknown word and understand its meaning
Use a dictionary to solve and find information about words
Recognize and use two consonant letters that represent sound at the beginning (and end) of a word
Recognize and use closed and open syllables
Infer something about a character and make predictions
Teach others about a topic

Math

In Math, they'll:

Apply addition properties as strategies to add more efficiently and use patterns to find sums
Solve multi-step problems
Use patterns to multiple by 0, 1, 2, 5, and 10
Demonstrate understanding of the Distributive Property
Apply properties of multiplication to recall 3s, 4s, 6s, 7s, 8s, and 9s facts
Use number lines
Explain why fraction comparisons are valid only when the wholes are the same size
Solve problems involving area and perimeter

Science

In Science, students will:

Make observations of objects in motion and predict the motion of other objects
Explain what causes objects to become charged and predict the effects of charges
Read and analyze patterns to predict traits offspring will inherit from their parents
Analyze and interpret data to explain the relationship between learning and behavior
Use evidence to show that distance from a coast will affect the climate of an area
