Grade 2

Grade 2 students are able to focus for longer periods of time. This is an exciting time for students--they're learning to think critically, and their various educational skills (like math) are developing.

Science

In Science, students will:

Investigate the effects of rocks tumbling in a river
Use a model to examine different factors, including shapes and kinds of land, that contribute to flash floods
Investigate different material properties and use those properties to design and build a hat that protects them from the sun
Observe traits of different animals and use that information to organize them into groups based on characteristics
Develop physical models of seed structures
Plan and conduct virtual experiments in order to determine how much water and sunlight a set of mystery plants need in order to stay healthy and survive

Social Studies

In Social Studies, students will:

Identify important community symbols
Define and give examples of rights and responsibilities
Identify the responsibilities and powers of each government branch and identify government officials that are voted into office
Identify continents and oceans
Identify and describe latitude and longitude
Explain the relationship between producers and consumers, define bartering, and identify connections between labor and wage
Develop a timeline of events in the history of the school or school community

Second Step

In Second Step, students learn to:

Identify respectful behaviors in themselves and others
Identify classroom distractions and demonstrate using self-talk in response to scenarios
Name a variety of feelings and determine what others are feeing using physical, verbal, and situational clues
Identify ways to show compassion
Demonstrate accepting responsibility for actions
