Grade 1

In English/Language Arts, they'll:

• Notice how letters and sounds work in different words
• Read and spell words with the 'silent e' spelling pattern
• Read, spell, and identify words with vowel teams and word parts
• Use keywords to talk about topics and bring a story to life by using drama and actions
• Plan and write a story, and add details to the characters and story to make it better
• Write a review

In Math, they'll:

• Discuss the relationships between quantities and problems while identifying solutions using 'can'
• Identify patterns and the value of a digit in two-digit numbers
• Choose effective strategies to solve equations
• Put together and create new 2-dimensional shapes using composite shapes
• Use regrouping to add two 2-digit numbers
• Determine object lengths using same and different-sized length unites

In Science, students will:

• Make observations and compare the parts of different plants
• Find patterns in how young and adult animals look
• Use an investigation to explain how sounds are created by different materials
• Investigate how objects can be seen when light hits them
• Predict how the amount of sunlight will change during the year
• Make a model to show patterns in the movement of the moon
• Talk about patterns in the night sky

In Social Studies, students will:

In Second Step, students learn to:

• Focus attention using eyes, ears, and brain
• Learn to use self-talk to help you focus and maintain attention
• Understand how others feel to improve relationships
• Recognize situations that require the use of calming down strategies
• Identify adults to talk to when feeling worried
