Curriculum Maps
What are Curriculum Maps?
A curriculum map is like a guide to a class. It outlines skills that students will be expected to learn in class and provides a reference point for parents.
If you've ever asked your student, "What did you learn about today?" and your student responds confidently with, "Nothing," then you can understand the value of curriculum maps. At a single glance, you can easily determine roughly what your child could have learned about.
These guides provide specific details about which resources are used for lessons, and even goes on to describe specific Indiana standards that lessons cover.
How do I interpret Curriculum Maps?
Our curriculum maps are organized for simplicity. The main things you should look over are these:
Unit Name: This is an umbrella term for the knowledge and skills that fall into a certain category.
Example: The Business curriculum map has Business Basics, Entrepreneurship, and Professional Communication categories. You have an idea of what these categories might entail even before you read further.
Knowledge Objectives: A knowledge objective is learning specific facts about things.
Example: A knowledge objective in an science class might be "know what snow, rain, and sunshine are."
Skills Objectives: A skill objective is how you use the knowledge you gain from knowledge objectives. These are designed to show understanding or mastery of an idea.
Example: In that same science class, a skill objective may be, "Explain how snow could affect different environments."
Specific Assessments: This refers to what sort of tests, quizzes, or activities students should expect during this unit.
Specific Resources: These are specific resources or activities teachers will use to guide understanding during the unit.
